PRD Maintains Local Party Status in Mexico City

The General Council of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City approved the PRD to remain as a local party after surpassing 3% of votes in recent elections. This status takes effect on November 1.

PRD Maintains Local Party Status in Mexico City

The General Council of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) approved the report that maintains the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) as a local party in the capital of the country, after it barely surpassed 3% of the votes during the recent elections on June 2, 2024. Therefore, the PRD's registration will take effect on November 1.

The IECM instructed the political party to make the necessary modifications to its Declaration of Principles and Statute within 60 business days after its registration becomes effective and to issue the internal regulations and guidelines provided in its statutory norms. In addition to completing the integration of its governing bodies according to its statutory provisions and designating the full and alternate representation before the General Council of the IECM according to the provisions of its Statute; the PRD was warned that if it does not carry out the aforementioned actions, the granted registration will cease to have effects.

The IECM recognized Deputy Nora Arias and Guillermo Domínguez Barrón as President and Secretary of Governments and Legislative Affairs, both from the Executive State Directorate of the PRD in Mexico City, respectively, to carry out, among other actions, the management of the corresponding prerogatives for the political party.

Within 10 calendar days from today, the Executive Secretary of the IECM will send the corresponding documentation to the Executive Directorate of Prerogatives and Political Parties of the National Electoral Institute (INE) and will request to load the registry of affiliated persons in Mexico City.

The registration as a local political party was due to the fact that on September 19, 2024, the General Council of the INE determined the loss of registration of the PRD as a national political party, as it did not obtain at least 3% of the valid votes cast in the federal election. In Mexico City, the valid votes cast for the Head of Government amounted to 5,445,476 votes, and the PRD obtained 3.04%. For the relative majority deputyships, the valid votes cast on June 2 amounted to 5,348,581 votes, of which the PRD obtained 3.73%; while for Mayorships and councilorships, the total was 5,364,311, with 4.05% for the political institute.
